Politicians as threat to democracy

In the ongoing campaigns for the 2015 general elections, now rescheduled for March 28 and April 11, virtually all the democratic institutions and other institutions of society that support democracy in the country have been rubbished as compromised by the major contending political parties, especially the ruling Peoples’ Democratic Party—PDP—and the coalition of opposition parties, the All Progressives Congress—APC, in their desperation to regain or capture political power, respectively.

A contest of hate and the way out

When the king picks up a cudgel, his kinsmen go berserk and become murderous. The diatribes and language of hate spewed by the leading contestants in the ongoing political rallies are stoking the flames of violence and preparing the ground for a constitutional crisis the magnitude of which no one could predict with certitude. The hirelings and spokesmen of the ruling Peoples’ Democratic Party—PDP—and those of the All Progressives Congress—APC—are daily heating up the political temperature of the country by portraying their presidential candidates—Goodluck Jonathan and Mohammadu Buhari, respectively—as liars and persons of dubious credentials that are utterly bereft of integrity; the subsisting Peace Accord notwithstanding.
